My Why

Good afternoon!  Welcome to BIMusings.com!!!  I hope that everyone that views this site learns at least a tidbit or two that will help them along their way, think of an issue from a different perspective, or at the very least gets them closer to resolving an issue or generating a larger conversation.  Before I start delving into the subject matter, the reason why I started this site is because I have a passion for things related to technology and automation and wanted a place to chronicle my related thoughts and experiences.

When I first started my journey into Business Intelligence, I was a seasoned developer and felt extremely comfortable with where I was as a professional.  I was comfortable in the sense that I knew essentially my 5 Ws (what, where, when, why, and who) of my role.  My end users were trusting of my direction and it was a Zen-type feel to my position.  Then, essentially the organization that I worked for decided to move in a different direction and I was at a fork in the road.  I had to decide to either embrace the role of Business Intelligence or get left behind.  Luckily, I had a couple of things going for me… I had a taste of BI due to the reporting requirements for one of the applications that I developed, and I had leadership that recognized that I have potential.  Without realizing what the journey entailed, I decided to go along with the shift and embrace BI.

In short, the transition was rough at first.  I had to accept that the BI is more of an artform than black and white as development tends to be.  It was a pivot from “Does the app/process work?” to “Does this report give you the insights you need?”  It was certainly more touchy-feely than what I was comfortable with.  What gave me the inspiration to keep on going (outside of having a family to support) is that my senior leader required one thing of me- Do not give up.  Since I am the type that tends to be a bit stubborn, I accepted the request literally and it has paid dividends.  Although the journey is not for the faint-of-heart, I have learned more in the past couple of years then I have in the past 5 years as a developer and as a result, I have become a consultant to many.

While the world of development changes frequently, I find that BI changes exponentially more with more tools becoming available and clients/customers becoming smarter and demanding more (usually with less resources to accommodate said demands).  With that being said, bumping into issues that aren’t exactly well documented becomes more frequent.  To assist with that, my desire is that this site at least provides someone with a solution, an idea, or a spark that leads to a different path that gets them to where they desire to be.   If you have a question or would like assistance on an issue, feel free to contact me via email or one of the social media platforms I have listed.

Thanks,

Rob
